More than 1,100 10- to 12-year-old baseball players converged this past Saturday on Nance Field at Yeonas Park to take part in Vienna Little League Opening Day 2010.
"It affirms that winter is over," said little league chairman Bill Cervenak. "Those kids are ready to pound the ball or throw it 100 miles. Everyone is ready to win the town tournament."
Cervenak said the ceremony gives the league, its more than 100 teams and its supporters a chance to look forward to the coming season, as well as honor former coaches and players.
"We always think of ourselves as a little community. Everybody seems to know each other because we all hang around here," Cervenak said. "You get to see all those kids that played Little League come back."
Even though the season is just under way, he said it always seems to end too quickly.
"In a blink, another season is gone," he said. "I tell my team, 'Trust me, boys, this is going to be the quickest two months that you've ever spent in your whole life.'"
